Mongolia on Wednesday voiced its strong belief that "every country could and should make its contribution to promoting the goals of nuclear non-proliferation."
The statement came as Ochir Enkhtsetseg, the Mongolian ambassador to the United Nations, was taking the floor at the conference to review the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which entered its third day at the UN Headquarters in New York.
"Mongolia strongly believes that every country could and should make its contribution to promoting the goals of nuclear non- proliferation," she said.
In 1992, Mongolia declared its territory a Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (NWFZ) "to demonstrate that a viable alternative to ensuring national security by acquiring nuclear weapons at any cost or by hosting nuclear weapons is to ensure national security by diplomatic and legal means," and "has since been working to institutionalize that status," she said.
"Today Mongolia's nuclear-weapons-free status enjoys a wide international support," she said.
